The Kinnear Classic is Canada’s largest one-day fundraiser. It
began in 1992 at the Glencoe Golf & Country Club outside
Calgary, where it continues to be held to this day.
The charitable event hosts various business, media and sports
personalities. And, as it goes into its 20th year, more than $10
million has been raised for various equipment and health
programs for the Rockyview General Hospital.
Bringing advanced technology to the Rockyview is at the heart of
the tournament’s purpose. Equipment which has been purchased by
the funds raised include a flexible endoscope which is used for
early detection of potentially cancerous growths in the bowel;
an electro-surgical cautery unit, used to advance the recovery
and increase the discomfort of surgical patients; and a digital
ultrasound system machine, used daily to determine the physical
state of various soft tissues ranging from eye tissue to heart
tissue; and a neonatal intensive care nursery built. Other
highlights included funding the first city-wide fully integrated
i-Suite operating room in North America, which is a
custom-designed space that employs laparoscopic and voice
control technology to power and direct all of its equipment.
Most recently, the event has also supported the investment in a
daVinci Robot at the Southern Alberta Urology Centre of
Excellence, an operating room console designed to decrease
invasive surgery and optimize doctor, nurse and patient
operating areas with its interactive robotic arms and use of
ergonomic technology. Funds raised at the 20th Anniversary
Kinnear Classic will continue to support the Urology Centre.
